What about those who’ve never heard about Jesus? How will God judge them?
Many people, including Christians still new in their faith, wonder about the answer to this dilemma, especially since the Bible says that Jesus is the only way to salvation. So how can those people who have never heard of Him be saved at all?
The best way to answer this is by seeking the answer in the Bible, which is God’s Word, and not by relying on our imaginations and speculations like many people do.
And fortunately for us all, the Bible does have the answer.
Let’s start with what the Bible says about all humans.
all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
The Bible says that ALL humans are sinners. And, as we have seen in previous posts, every sinner deserves to go to hell for his sins against the holy God. No sinner deserves heaven. So even if a sinner has never heard about Jesus, he is still a sinner and, thus, he still deserves hell.
Therefore, it is wrong to say that God will have unjust mercy on such a sinner upon his death. Justice is justice, and as God is just, He will not compromise at all with His divine justice.
You might say: “But this is unfair! How can God send someone to hell just because he didn’t hear about Jesus?!”
Many people say something similar to the above. But the thing is, God doesn’t send people to hell. Their sins send them there.
And it’s not the question of whether you see it as fair or unfair. The real question is: Does God Himself see it as fair or unfair?
But then you might ask: “Isn’t God love as the Bible says? Doesn’t He do what He can to give every human the opportunity to be saved?”
Of course He does! And the Bible confirms it very well.
1 Timothy 2:3-4
This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.
So God wants everyone to be saved, not just a select few! This means that every sinner has the opportunity to be saved.
So how can someone who’s never heard of Jesus be saved?
Here’s something you probably haven’t heard of before: God’s existence is plain to all men.
Man is aware of the existence of the Creator.
The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities-his eternal power and divine nature-have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.
No sinner has an excuse! All sinners are aware of God’s existence. All know that He exists.
In addition to being aware of God’s existence, man also has the work of the law written in his heart.
(Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law, since they show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts now accusing, now even defending them.)
As we can see, the requirements of the law (the work of the law) is written in man’s heart, even if he doesn’t have the law.
And so, just as the law makes the sinner who has the law feel condemned, the law also makes the sinner who doesn’t have the actual law feel condemned, too.
And it is this condemnation that leads the condemned to seek salvation by God’s grace.
The thing is, however, that many seek salvation in wrong places and with wrong ways. They don’t want to ask the holy God for salvation because that would mean turning away from the sins which they love.
So what do they do? They go to religions and such. And when they don’t find true salvation in those religions, they either fall deeper and deeper into the traps of religion or they give up and announce to themselves that God does not (or may not) exist.
Whatever the case, they choose not to go to the real holy God for salvation, even though God has given every man the opportunity to seek salvation from Him.
But when you do not resist God’s grace and you, thus, accept God’s gift of salvation for you by faith, that’s when you become saved, even if never heard the word “Jesus” before.
For God doesn’t necessarily lead people to salvation by hearing the word “Jesus” but by leading them to believe in the name (the nature) of Jesus Christ. When you accept, by faith, the free gift of salvation from the real holy God, you necessarily believe in the name of Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour, especially since Jesus Christ is God’s salvation for us all.
For example, let’s talk a bit about Abraham.
Abraham most likely never heard the word “Jesus”, and he most likely had no clue how exactly God would save us through Jesus. But he believed that God would provide salvation for him in one way or another, and, thus, he was saved by grace alone through living faith alone.
What does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.”
If it was credited to him as righteousness, then he was justified in the eyes of God and saved because of his faith in the real God who provides salvation to all who seek it from Him.
So this is how you can know that one can be saved even if he never heard about Jesus before. God leads him to Christ, just as He led the magi to Bethlehem to meet Jesus.
Of course, in this day and age, it is not likely at all to meet a person who has never heard about Jesus in any way.
So whatever you do and wherever you go, if you don’t believe in God’s gift of salvation (which is Jesus), then you stay condemned because you have not believed in the Way to God (whose name is Jesus Christ).
