What about those who have never heard about Jesus?

What about those who’ve never heard about Jesus? How will God judge them?

Many people, including Christians still new in their faith, wonder about the answer to this dilemma, especially since the Bible says that Jesus is the only way to salvation. So how can those people who have never heard of Him be saved at all?

The best way to answer this is by seeking the answer in the Bible, which is God’s Word, and not by relying on our imaginations and speculations like many people do.

And fortunately for us all, the Bible does have the answer.

Let’s start with what the Bible says about all humans.

Romans 3:23

all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

The Bible says that ALL humans are sinners. And, as we have seen in previous posts, every sinner deserves to go to hell for his sins against the holy God. No sinner deserves heaven. So even if a sinner has never heard about Jesus, he is still a sinner and, thus, he still deserves hell.

Therefore, it is wrong to say that God will have unjust mercy on such a sinner upon his death. Justice is justice, and as God is just, He will not compromise at all with His divine justice.

You might say: “But this is unfair! How can God send someone to hell just because he didn’t hear about Jesus?!”

Many people say something similar to the above. But the thing is, God doesn’t send people to hell. Their sins send them there.

And it’s not the question of whether you see it as fair or unfair. The real question is: Does God Himself see it as fair or unfair?

But then you might ask: “Isn’t God love as the Bible says? Doesn’t He do what He can to give every human the opportunity to be saved?”

Of course He does! And the Bible confirms it very well.

1 Timothy 2:3-4

This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.

So God wants everyone to be saved, not just a select few! This means that every sinner has the opportunity to be saved.

So how can someone who’s never heard of Jesus be saved?

Here’s something you probably haven’t heard of before: God’s existence is plain to all men.

Man is aware of the existence of the Creator.

Romans 1:18-20

The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities-his eternal power and divine nature-have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.

No sinner has an excuse! All sinners are aware of God’s existence. All know that He exists.

In addition to being aware of God’s existence, man also has the work of the law written in his heart.

Romans 2:14-15

(Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law, since they show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts now accusing, now even defending them.)

As we can see, the requirements of the law (the work of the law) is written in man’s heart, even if he doesn’t have the law.

And so, just as the law makes the sinner who has the law feel condemned, the law also makes the sinner who doesn’t have the actual law feel condemned, too.

And it is this condemnation that leads the condemned to seek salvation by God’s grace.

The thing is, however, that many seek salvation in wrong places and with wrong ways. They don’t want to ask the holy God for salvation because that would mean turning away from the sins which they love.

So what do they do? They go to religions and such. And when they don’t find true salvation in those religions, they either fall deeper and deeper into the traps of religion or they give up and announce to themselves that God does not (or may not) exist.

Whatever the case, they choose not to go to the real holy God for salvation, even though God has given every man the opportunity to seek salvation from Him.

But when you do not resist God’s grace and you, thus, accept God’s gift of salvation for you by faith, that’s when you become saved, even if never heard the word “Jesus” before.

For God doesn’t necessarily lead people to salvation by hearing the word “Jesus” but by leading them to believe in the name (the nature) of Jesus Christ. When you accept, by faith, the free gift of salvation from the real holy God, you necessarily believe in the name of Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour, especially since Jesus Christ is God’s salvation for us all.

For example, let’s talk a bit about Abraham.

Abraham most likely never heard the word “Jesus”, and he most likely had no clue how exactly God would save us through Jesus. But he believed that God would provide salvation for him in one way or another, and, thus, he was saved by grace alone through living faith alone.

Romans 4:3

What does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.”

If it was credited to him as righteousness, then he was justified in the eyes of God and saved because of his faith in the real God who provides salvation to all who seek it from Him.

So this is how you can know that one can be saved even if he never heard about Jesus before. God leads him to Christ, just as He led the magi to Bethlehem to meet Jesus.

Of course, in this day and age, it is not likely at all to meet a person who has never heard about Jesus in any way.

So whatever you do and wherever you go, if you don’t believe in God’s gift of salvation (which is Jesus), then you stay condemned because you have not believed in the Way to God (whose name is Jesus Christ).

  1. Melinda says:

I’ve often wondered this dilemma and this post definitely helps to clarify it. Thank you!

  2. Just as our brother SoldierofChrist explained, Romans 1 tells us that all humans without exception know about God from what He has made, i.e. the creation. God has revealed Himself in His creation. Anyone whose heart God opens with His Grace through this revelation, will surely accept the Message of the Gospel when it comes to him. And God will surely reach him with that Message.

It is to be noted that many of those who have heard the Message of the Gospel still didn’t really hear it, as they refuse it. And many of those who do not want to accept the Gospel hide themselves behind people who they suppose never heard the Gospel. But, as we have seen in the original post, all humans should believe in God, as they all know about Him, so they are without excuse as they refuse to believe in Him. And if you have heard the Gospel, you are doubly without excuse!

Another important point to note is that many people do not understand a very essential point in this matter: that Jesus Christ is this same Creator God. There is no human religion that preaches about the Creator God. All of them preach about a false god who is not really Omnipotent and Righteous and Savior. It is only the Bible that preaches about this Creator God, and as we have seen this God has revealed Himself in the creation.

It is also interesting to note that this same Creator God’s Name is Redeemer!! Read it:

“For You are our Father, though Abraham does not know us And Israel does not recognize us. You, O LORD, are our Father, Our Redeemer from of old is Your name.” (Isaiah 63:16)

“Redeemer” means the One who saves from the slavery of sin. Did you know that “Jesus” means “God Savior” or “God saves”?? Well, yes: that’s the only Name by which people can be saved in the New Testament time AND in the Old Testament time. Abraham is a very beautiful example about someone who had never heard the Gospel, and yet God reached him with His Gospel when he was still in Ur of the Chaldeans!! Another beautiful example is Noah! Another example is Job! And the examples are many.

Another error that many people do when they ask the question about those who never heard the Gospel is about the nature of the Gospel. They think that the Gospel is something new that suddenly came in the New Testament. And yet, the Gospel was there during the whole time of the Old Testament, even in the Law!! Read the Apostle Paul quoting the Law about the Gospel:

“But the righteousness based on faith speaks as follows: “DO NOT SAY IN YOUR HEART, ‘WHO WILL ASCEND INTO HEAVEN?’ (that is, to bring Christ down),
or ‘WHO WILL DESCEND INTO THE ABYSS?’ (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead).”
But what does it say? “THE WORD IS NEAR YOU, IN YOUR MOUTH AND IN YOUR HEART”–that is, the word of faith which we are preaching”
    (Romans 10:6-8)

So you see that the Word of faith that we preach is already in the Law. That’s why the Apostle continues and says:

“But I say, surely they have never heard, have they? Indeed they have; “THEIR VOICE HAS GONE OUT INTO ALL THE EARTH, AND THEIR WORDS TO THE ENDS OF THE WORLD.”” (Romans 10:18)

Indeed they have!! All have heard the Word of faith, and those who die without believing in Christ today are dying in their sins and without excuse!

The same Word of faith was revealed to Adam and Eve!! Read it:

“And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel.” (Genesis 3:15)

This is about Jesus Christ. All humans since Adam knew this truth, but the majority refused it. And that’s why we read about many characters in pagan mythology that are similar to Jesus. You know why? Because humans have refused the real Seed of the woman who would bruise Satan on the head, and have invented similar characters only to refuse the real Savior who was revealed even to Adam, their first parent who told all his children about this truth of the Savior.

So the fact is that all humans everywhere know about Jesus Christ, but they have refused this knowledge and are lost in their darkness. The Word of faith that we preach is for all those whose heart God opens to accept this Message:

“A woman named Lydia, from the city of Thyatira, a seller of purple fabrics, a worshiper of God, was listening; and the Lord opened her heart to respond to the things spoken by Paul.” (Acts 16:14)

So let’s be careful to know the truth as it is revealed in the Bible. The question about those who never heard about Jesus is based on all the false assumptions mentioned till here.

    Grace be with you!
    Disciple of Jesus Christ

  3. Dear brothers in Christ!

The above study is very important and useful, and many have asked this question and never got the biblical answer to it.

I thank the Lord Who is using each of His body members to do the required tasks, glorifying Him all along.
(Rom 12:4-5) “For just as we have many members in one body and all the members do not have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.”

I can assure you that this is the first site I have ever visited where one can find nothing but the biblical Truth without any compromise.

May the Holy Spirit keep guiding us and filling us with the knowledge and wisdom of God, so we can continue to proclaim His Gospel, our Beloved Lord Jesus Christ, blessed be His Holy Name and to Him all the praise and glory,

    Amen!

    Christservant.
