(Matthew 4:18-22) “Now as Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon who was called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. 19 And He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men. 20 Immediately they left their nets and followed Him. 21 Going on from there He saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and He called them. 22 Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him.”
The above verses tell us about the early ministry of the Lord Jesus and the first disciples He called to follow Him.
We start with the fishermen Simon who was called Peter and his brother Andrew. As soon as the Lord Jesus said to them “Follow me… Immediately they left their nets and followed Him.” Same with the next two fishermen, the brothers James and John, the sons of Zebedee. When “He called them. Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him.”
Today, our main focus is on James and John the sons of Zebedee. This is a message for the parents. When the Lord calls your child, DO NOT STOP them from leaving everything, EVEN YOU, to follow Him. Let Jesus’ disciples, James and John, be their examples in how “they left the boat and their father, and followed Him.” The Lord’s calling is a once-in-a-lifetime-opportunity. I urge all parents, please, if you have a child whom the Lord has called, DO NOT STAND in their way, let your child follow the Lord and live a life that glorifies Him. Encourage your child to answer their calling because without the Lord, your child WILL NOT inherit ETERNAL LIFE but WILL CERTAINLY PERISH.
If you think to yourself, in a worldly manner, that it is not appealing for your child to live a godly life, and you are worried about what friends and family might think about your child, or even if you are worried about your own reputation, PLEASE think again, you are doing your child NO FAVOR by forbidding them from following the Lord, even worse, you are putting yourself in a position where you will have to answer the Lord Almighty Himself on Judgment Day on why you did such a thing and will be paying ETERNAL CONSEQUENCES. What you really want to be concerned about is yours and your child’s ETERNAL LIFE, and not the temporary fleshly pleasures of your very short lives on earth.
Dear parents, if the Lord has called your child, show them how great and selfless your love to them is, allow them “to leave the boat and their father” and to follow Him immediately like the first disciples did. What this means in your child’s daily life is that they will no longer live a worldly life, they will no longer live a sinful life, but a life where God is their first and most important priority, a life that glorifies the Lord where He will make them fishers of men as He faithfully promised.
The Lord Jesus’ last words to His disciples were “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations,” (Matthew 28:19a) As true fishers of men or effective disciples, we must be patient, must have perseverance, have good instincts and stay out of sight. Also, we must not get in the way of our witnessing, so as not to be an obstacle to sinners coming to Christ. Let us remain faithful in dropping our line into the water even if we don’t always come away with a catch.
The Lord bless you and your loved ones.
