On what should we build our faith?

We have an important question from Max; he says:

i have a question, i really want to believe, i kind of feel i already do, it’s just i really would love some proof, evidence anything helpful really, i saw that a HUGE number of scientist(something around 90%+) are becoming/are atheist because of the scientific conclusions they are coming to, and it kind of scares me because i don’t want to believe that. i just really want some type of info that can make me feel a little more at ease something reassuring everything is going to be okay. and why can’t the lord almighty himself present himself to me showing his real. if he can and he’s out there i really would love for him to do so. because if he created this world, i would think he could come talk to me, or show me a sign. Makes since to me.

thanks that is all,

sincerely, a very concerned/confused citizen

Dear Max, it’s good that you want to build your life on a strong basis; and the essential thing is to find the right basis on which you can safely and wisely build your life so that you may not find out at the end that you were deceived and that you have followed a lie. It’s really dangerous to take the wrong road that leads to eternal loss, so you should make sure you’re on the right path.

Now, let’s see together some of the things that cannot be the strong basis on which you can build your life safely:

1. Your feelings or your heart

You can’t build your life on your feelings, because they may deceive you. God says: “The heart is deceitful above all things, and incurable; who can know it? I Jehovah search the heart” (Jeremiah 17:9-10). God says He knows your heart and my heart, and His diagnosis is that our hearts are deceitful above all things. Your heart is so deceitful that it is able to present to you something that pleases your flesh as being the right thing, although it is very wrong. For example, your heart may tell you that there is nothing wrong in lusting for a woman, and it even gives you some excuses that justify that lust, although that’s in fact adultery, i.e. a sin. Your heart may tell you that you’re a believer, although you live in sin, but that doesn’t mean that you’re really a believer; that only means that your heart is deceitful as God says. Your heart makes you put your trust on all what pleases your flesh and your imperfect mind, and it can never reach the truth without the revelation of God. So it’s not enough to feel that you believe; you should make sure you are in Faith. Remember the virgin Mary: if she followed her feelings when the angel told her that she would get pregnant without relations with any man, she would only say “I don’t feel this is possible, as we all know by experience that a virgin cannot have a child!” Scientists would tell her that this is scientifically impossible… But that’s not who God is. God is not only the God of what is humanly possible, but He is also the God of what is humanly impossible, and of what is above the human logic, although not illogical.

2. The opinion of the majority

You can’t build your life on the opinion of the majority, because a lie does not become the truth if the majority of humans consider it to be the truth. 99.99% of all humans have sinned… Actually, only one human did not sin, and that is Jesus… Well, does this mean that sinning is the right thing to do because all men sin? Not at all. During the trial of Jesus, the people were given the option to choose between Jesus and a murderer, and the majority chose the murderer and wanted Jesus to be considered guilty and to be crucified as a sinner. Does this mean that the truth was that Jesus was a sinner? Never. The opinion of the majority is not the truth, so you can’t build your life and your principles on the opinion of the majority.

Jesus said:

“Enter in through the narrow gate, for wide the gate and broad the way that leads to destruction, and many are they who enter in through it. For narrow the gate and straitened the way that leads to life, and they are few who find it.” (Matthew 7:13-14)

The majority choose the wide gate and the broad way, because they prefer to disobey God and to live a life in which they only please themselves, without giving to God what belongs to Him, i.e. honor, worship, respect and obedience. But this doesn’t mean that this wide gate and this broad way lead to eternal life. Jesus said that this broad way actually leads to eternal destruction in Hell because of disobedience to the truth. As we have seen above, the feelings are deceitful: just as your heart deceives you, the hearts of the majority also deceive them and make them think that the broad way leads to life, although the fact is that it leads to death: “There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof is the ways of death.” (Proverbs 14:12) The gate is narrow and the way is straitened that leads to life, and those who find it are a minority compared to the majority that chooses the broad way.

So you can’t follow the opinion of the majority.

Now, you may say: “But what if that majority is a majority of scientists?” Well, the answer is that the majority of scientists is still a majority of humans whose hearts deceive them. In fact, human science cannot study God for the simple fact that human science, and more precisely the physical sciences, do not study the spiritual, but the physical. And God is Spirit (cf. John 4:24). So how can the physical sciences study God who is Spirit? Since when did physical sciences begin to study the spiritual? How can any scientific conclusion lead to the strange opinion that God does not exist? Actually, there is not a single scientific proof or evidence that God the Creator does not exist, but on the contrary, the whole evidence of science and logic says that God the Creator exists. So those scientists who say there is no God are just expressing their personal opinions and beliefs, and we have seen that we can’t follow the opinion of the majority. The truth is that the whole universe gives the evidence that there was a creation and that the Creator made from nothing all what is seen and all what is not seen. A true scientist will admit that physical sciences cannot study God as He is not under the laws of science, and he will accept the evidence of science and logic. A real scientist is thus humble and knows the limits of human science, while the proud scientists deny God without any proof against Him other than their personal opinions, and they contradict the basic laws of science while trying to oppose God. As God is the Author of the laws of science (i.e. the laws of nature), so it is not strange that all those who oppose God will surely oppose the laws that He has put. For a detailed explanation of the evidence for God, please read the article What is the evidence for God’s existence?

So when an atheist scientist talks about (or more precisely against) God, he is not doing science, but philosophy. God warns us of listening to human vain philosophies that are not based on the absolute truth: “See that there be no one who shall lead you away as a prey through philosophy and vain deceit, according to the teaching of men, according to the elements of the world, and not according to Christ.” (Colossians 2:8) The atheist scientists, when they do science, they are obliged to contradict their beliefs and to admit (although not directly) that there is a cause for everything they study, and that there are clear and unchanging laws in nature that by their uniformity make it possible for us to study things. It is God who has put that order in His creation. Indeed, if we would follow the beliefs of the atheist scientists, we would not have any progress in modern science, as their beliefs contradict the basic laws of science. An interesting article to read about this is: Evolutionism contradicts science. The scientists who founded modern science were people who believed in creation and in the Creator: Kepler (astronomy), Pascal (hydrostatics), Boyle (chemistry), Newton (Physics), Steno (stratigraphy), Faraday (Magnetic theory), Babbage (computers), Agassiz (ichthyology), Simpson (gynecology), Mendel (genetics), Pasteur (bacteriology), Kelvin (thermodynamics), Lister (antiseptic surgery), Maxwell (electrodynamics), Ramsay (isotopic chemistry)… If the whole humanity followed the philosophy of the atheists, we would not have our modern science today.

So it’s wrong to follow the opinion of the majority. We should build our life on something more certain than human opinions and philosophies.

3. Signs and visions

It is commonly accepted as a fact that the signs and visions and all supernatural events come from God, but that’s wrong. God says that Satan may appear in a vision in the form of an angel of light:

“And [it is] not wonderful, for Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light.” (2 Corinthians 11:14)

As you ask for God to show Himself to you, then I would like to ask you how you will know that the one who will appear to you is God, and not Satan disguised? It would not be wise to believe any vision as coming from God. So the main question is: How will God convince you that this vision is from Him? Is it not by a promise that He previously made to you to appear to you? So your faith will be built on that promise, and not on the vision itself. And God has not given you any promise to appear to you in any other way than His Son crucified as we will see. So if you don’t believe the promises of God first, then you can’t understand a vision in the true way. So faith comes first, before a vision, and this faith should be built on something else than the vision itself. Faith should be built on the Word of God (the promises and warnings of God written in the Bible). “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.” (Romans 10:17) And we have seen that the Bible does not promise you that God will appear to you now. We will see why.

And the Bible never says that signs and wonders are always from God. On the contrary, Jesus and His Apostles clearly warned us that many false prophets will come and make wonders and signs:

“For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall give great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect.” (Matthew 24:24)

“and then the lawless one shall be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus shall consume with the breath of his mouth, and shall annul by the appearing of his coming; whose coming is according to the working of Satan in all power and signs and wonders of falsehood, and in all deceit of unrighteousness to them that perish, because they have not received the love of the truth that they might be saved. And for this reason God sends to them a working of error, that they should believe what is false, that all might be judged who have not believed the truth, but have found pleasure in unrighteousness.” (2 Thessalonians 2:8-12)

You notice in this last passage that those who will be misled by those false signs and wonders will be the ones who refused to believe the truth, i.e. they refused to believe what God said; they found pleasure in unrighteousness and they refused to repent.

So faith cannot be built on signs and wonders and visions. If you don’t first have faith, you will not understand and accept any vision or sign that comes from God. This is proven by the fact that the Jews who had seen many of Christ’s signs still asked Him to show them a sign… Read with me:

“And the Pharisees went out and began to dispute against him, seeking from him a sign from heaven, tempting him. And groaning in his spirit, he says, Why does this generation seek a sign? Verily I say unto you, A sign shall in no wise be given to this generation.” (Mark 8:11-12)

Jesus in fact made many signs and miracles before that generation. What He said in this passage does not mean that He would not do miracles and signs, but that He would not do the signs that they expected with a wrong logic and a dishonest heart that does not believe God.

Note that the people who saw Jesus saw God incarnate, and yet that didn’t make them all believers, because faith cannot be built on what is seen or on personal opinions, as I explained above. Only those who really saw Jesus by faith in God’s Word could have a personal relationship with God. And real faith is the opposite of sight, although not the opposite of objective assurance (compare 2 Corinthians 5:7 with Hebrews 11:1). Faith receives the Word of God and thus it has assurance, because it testifies that God is true and cannot lie.

Now, why does not God appear to you? That’s not because of an inability in Him, but because of an inability in you as a creature. No creature can see God (cf. John 1:18, 1 Timothy 1:17, 1 Timothy 6:16). First, God is Spirit, and spirits cannot be seen by physical eyes. And even if you are not in a physical body, you cannot see God, because He is eternal; He exists in the past, in the present, in the future, and outside of time at the same time! So if you want to see Him, you need to be in all those times and outside of time at the same time, which is impossible for you. Again, God exists in all places and outside of all places at the same time! So if you want to see Him, you need to be in all places at the same time, which again is impossible for you. What I just explained to you was expressed by God when He said: “You cannot see My face, for no man can see Me and live!” (Exodus 33:20)

God is Light. That’s not any light, but an unapproachable light! “dwelling in unapproachable light; whom no man has seen, nor is able to see” (1 Timothy 6:16). Now, imagine yourself trying to look into the bright light of the sun! You will have a big difficulty to look, and you may risk to have a problem in your eyes after looking. Some people have lost their sight after watching a solar eclipse. Now, if you are unable to look to a created light, then how do you expect to see God, the uncreated Light, with your eyes, and live?! If you try to see Him you will surely be melted, and not just get blind!

So you can’t see God, because YOU are unable. But God is able to show Himself to you, and that’s what He did, but without compromising His divine Nature. I mean, God could appear to us, humans, without ceasing to be God. That happened when God was incarnated in His Son, Jesus Christ. The only way to see God is to see Him in Jesus Christ and according to His Word, and not according to human opinions or wishes (you should believe the Christ of the Bible and not the “Christ” of human imaginations and feelings). True believers are those who receive God’s Word and wait for the appearing of Jesus in His second coming, and not now, not according to their wishes but according to God’s Will: “awaiting the blessed hope and appearing of the glory of our great God and Saviour Jesus Christ” (Titus 2:13).

So, dear Max, you asked an important question, and I pray that you will listen to the answer. An Apostle of Christ had the same wish that you had, so read carefully what Jesus answered him: “Philip says to him, Lord, shew us the Father and it suffices us. Jesus says to him, Am I so long a time with you, and thou hast not known me, Philip? He that has seen me has seen the Father; and how sayest thou, Shew us the Father? Believest thou not that I [am] in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words which I speak to you I do not speak from myself; but the Father who abides in me, he does the works.” (John 14:8-10)

So you need to know Jesus in order to know God. You need to be reconciled with God through Jesus Christ. Jesus said: “All things have been delivered to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son but the Father, nor does any one know the Father, but the Son, and he to whom the Son may be pleased to reveal [him].” (Matthew 11:27) You and I need the revelation of the Son, i.e. of Jesus Christ, in order to know God. Why is it so? Because we have a serious problem, the problem of sin that separates us from God. God hates sin, so we can’t have a right relationship with Him while still being in our sins. Our sins have put us in enmity against God, and we need to be reconciled with Him. Nothing impure can approach to God. No one but he who is pure in heart can see God:

“Blessed the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” (Matthew 5:8)

Now, I encourage you to read the above verse very carefully, for in it is the whole answer for your question. Only those who are pure in heart will see God. Another verse comes to clarify this more: “holiness, without which no one shall see the Lord” (Hebrews 12:14) Without holiness and total purity, you cannot see God. So if you seriously wish to see God and to have the assurance of having eternal life, you need to have this holiness and this purity of heart. If you honestly look for an assurance concerning God and your eternal destiny, you should consider this truth very carefully and very seriously.

Now, the wrong thing to do is to claim that you already have a pure heart and that you deserve to see God. God says that all humans, including you, do not have a pure heart and are by nature sinners:

“according as it is written, There is not a righteous [man], not even one; there is not the [man] that understands, there is not one that seeks after God. All have gone out of the way, they have together become unprofitable; there is not one that practises goodness, there is not so much as one” (Romans 3:10-12)

These are serious declarations from God about our sinfulness. So if you say you have not sinned and that you have a pure heart, you will be making God a liar. God said: “for all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23) This “all” includes you.

And God says that what is making you unable to see Him is your sins that have separated you from Him: “but your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid [his] face from you” (Isaiah 59:2) This separation from God is called “death” in the Bible; it is the spiritual death in which all humans are because of their sins. Just as the separation of your spirit from your body means biological death for your body, your separation from God means spiritual death for you. God says that this spiritual death (and as a consequence the biological death) is the wages of sin: “For the wages of sin [is] death” (Romans 6:23). So if you honestly want to be reconciled with God and to see Him, you first need to admit that you’re a sinner, just as God says, and that you are separated from God’s Presence and you cannot see Him and reach Him by your efforts and merits. All your good works and merits cannot reconcile you with God, because whatever you do you are still a sinner who is spiritually dead in his sins. So you are unable to please God by your efforts and merits.

You realize what this means: as long as you are in your sins, the wrath of God abides on you because of your sins, and you are heading directly towards that day when you will stand before the judgment-seat of the Holy God who hates your sins, and you will be condemned to eternal Hell… You can’t see God while you are still in your sins; you are separated from Him. And whatever you may do, you have no way to escape that eternal destiny.

If you are really honest in seeking for the truth, what you just read should make you tremble and seriously look for a way out! Whatever God said in the past was proven to be right, and now He says that a day is coming when He will judge all humans with total justice. You should realize that this means you are lost forever in the eternal tortures of Hell, without any hope and without any way out… You cannot save yourself, and no other human can save you, as all humans are sinners and themselves need someone to save them.

This is our dark condition… But the Good News is that God loved us and wanted to save us from this condition. As all humans are sinners and none of us can save another from his sins, so God chose to come Himself in the Person of His Son Jesus Christ, to be incarnated, to live the perfect life that a human should live before God, and then to pay the wages of our sins in our place. As we have seen above, the wages or debt of our sin was eternal separation from God (death). Just as God had promised through His prophets in the Old Testament, Christ died for our sins, and thus He paid the debt of our sins. After overcoming sin and death, He rose again on the third day. Jesus has overcome sin and death and the sinful system of this world. He is risen from the dead, and He is now alive. He went to Heaven, and He is there until the day when He will come to take His own to Himself and to judge all humans according to their works. He now calls all sinners to repentance:

“God therefore, having overlooked the times of ignorance, now enjoins men that they shall all everywhere repent, because he has set a day in which he is going to judge the habitable earth in righteousness by [the] man whom he has appointed, giving the proof [of it] to all [in] having raised him from among [the] dead.” (Acts 17:30-31)

This is a serious call to repentance, and it will be very wrong to despise this call that God addresses to you as a sinner with love and patience:

“or despisest thou the riches of his goodness, and forbearance, and long-suffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads thee to repentance? but, according to thy hardness and impenitent heart, treasurest up to thyself wrath, in [the] day of wrath and revelation of [the] righteous judgment of God, who shall render to each according to his works” (Romans 2:4-6)

Repentance means to leave your sins and all kinds of worldly thinking and wishes and ambitions, and to put your whole trust in Christ as your personal Lord and Savior who gave His life for you to save you from sin and to make you His own, a child of God in Him. You deny yourself and the sinful system of the world, and you come to Jesus to follow Him and to obey Him as your Lord, because He died for you to save you from your sins and to give you the free Gift of eternal life that you could never have by your efforts and merits. This is what God calls a living faith. By this faith you receive the forgiveness of God for all your sins, because Christ paid their debt instead of you, and you receive the free Gift of eternal life:

“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23)

“And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that hears say, Come. And let him that is athirst come; he that will, let him take [the] water of life freely.” (Revelation 22:17)

So if you are really thirsty for eternal life, if you are really thirsty for this purity and holiness without which no one will see God, then deny yourself, deny the sinful system of this world, leave your sins and come to Jesus, putting your whole trust on Him and on what He did on the cross for your Salvation. By that work that He finished on the cross, you become totally pure and righteous before God, and you can’t add anything to what Jesus did:

“By this will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.” (Hebrews 10:10)

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us [our] sins, and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9)

It is thus that you get a new and purified heart, and thus you can have the sure hope to see God in Christ. It is thus that you pass from spiritual death to eternal life:

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, that he that hears my word, and believes him that has sent me, has life eternal, and does not come into judgment, but is passed out of death into life.” (John 5:24)

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only-begotten Son, that whosoever believes on him may not perish, but have life eternal.” (John 3:16)

Do you want to experience this love of God and have eternal life? I pray that you will not postpone this, and that you will not despise this great Salvation.

Dear Max, I pray for you and ask the Lord to open your eyes to this very important truth, if you have not seen it yet. And I wish to hear back from you: share your thoughts with us, and let us know what are your concerns and what you still want to be clarified. Please, don’t be careless about the Salvation of your soul.
